Why is choosing the right menu so important when eating out during a diet? Isn't it enough to just track the calories?

Focusing on 'what' you eat is more critical than simply counting calories because food quality determines your metabolic efficiency. Frequent dining out often leads to an intake of refined sugars and high sodium, which triggers insulin overstimulation and water retention. This inevitably slows down your metabolism and causes edema, often resulting in a weight loss plateau.

Many people believe that as long as the calories are low, any food will do. However, the real issue with restaurant meals lies in the abundance of additives and refined carbohydrates. From a conventional medical perspective, these ingredients cause rapid spikes in blood glucose, prompting excessive insulin secretion that promotes fat storage, while high sodium levels cause cellular water retention and bloating. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), this condition is referred to as 'Dameum' (痰飮), which represents the accumulation of metabolic waste and stagnant fluids resulting from impaired fluid metabolism. When irritating or overly processed foods lead to the buildup of Dameum, the circulation of Qi and Blood is obstructed. This slows down the overall metabolic rate, potentially transforming your body into a constitution that is resistant to weight loss. Furthermore, individuals with 'Bi-heo' (脾虛), or a deficiency in Spleen function, are particularly vulnerable. For those with weakened digestive capacity, greasy and processed outside meals can create a vicious cycle where toxins accumulate rather than nutrients being absorbed. Therefore, the key to successful weight loss is not merely eating less, but choosing menus that preserve and support your body's natural metabolic environment.
