Can I safely drink zero-sugar diet drinks from coffee chains? Why do people say they actually interfere with weight loss?

Artificial sweeteners trigger 'Cephalic Phase Insulin Release,' where the brain anticipates sugar and releases insulin. When no sugar follows, blood sugar drops, causing 'fake hunger' and carb cravings. In Traditional Korean Medicine, these artificial tastes and cold temperatures cause Spleen Deficiency (Biheo), leading to the accumulation of Phlegm-Fluid (Dameum). This metabolic waste makes the body more prone to storing fat, meaning zero-calorie drinks can actually transform your constitution into one that gains weight easily.

Even as a practitioner, I’ve found myself reaching for a zero-sugar ade for a quick boost, thinking it’s harmless. However, our metabolic system is far more complex than a simple calorie calculator. From a Western medical perspective, artificial sweeteners are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar. When this intense sweetness hits the tongue, the brain signals the pancreas to release insulin in anticipation of glucose. Since no actual sugar enters the bloodstream, blood sugar levels drop, leading to 'insulin confusion.' This physiological betrayal triggers intense appetite and often results in overeating during the next meal. Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) diagnoses this phenomenon through the concepts of Spleen Deficiency (Biheo, 脾虛) and Phlegm-Fluid (Dameum, 痰飮). The Spleen is the organ responsible for digestion and energy conversion. Artificial additives and the cold nature of these drinks extinguish the Spleen’s 'metabolic fire.' When this function is impaired, the body fails to expel waste, leading to the accumulation of Phlegm-Fluid. This waste obstructs the circulation of Qi and Blood, causing the body to feel heavy and making it significantly harder to lose weight despite a low calorie intake. While an occasional drink is fine, successful dieting requires resetting a palate accustomed to fake sweetness. Rather than suppressing hunger with diet drinks, I recommend drinking lukewarm water or herbal teas to revitalize Spleen function. The key is creating an internal environment where the body can naturally burn energy rather than just counting numbers on a label.
