Doctor, why is it that the fat on my thighs specifically is so much harder to lose than in other areas?
Lower body obesity typically begins with poor blood circulation leading to the accumulation of waste. This follows a cycle of [circulation stagnation → edema → fat accumulation and solidification]. While Western medicine emphasizes lymphatic drainage and hormones, Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) views this as a state of 'Dameum' (phlegm-fluid retention) caused by blocked Qi and Blood flow. Therefore, the solution is not simply eating less, but first clearing these blocked pathways.
I completely understand your frustration; even in my younger days, I exercised rigorously yet struggled with specific stubborn areas.
Structurally, the lower body is the area most prone to the stagnation of blood and lymph fluid due to gravity. When circulation is impaired, unnecessary fluids accumulate between cells causing edema, which, over time, can transform into hard, solidified fat layers.
In TKM, this condition is referred to as 'Dameum' (痰飮), a state where bodily fluids fail to circulate properly, becoming viscous and turning into metabolic waste. When this is coupled with 'Eohyeol' (瘀血)—stagnant, degraded blood—it creates an inflammatory environment that further inhibits weight loss.
This becomes more complex if you have 'Bi-heo' (脾虛), or a deficiency in the Spleen. Since the Spleen is responsible for fluid metabolism, a weakened Spleen leads to increased swelling in the lower body.
This is why thigh fat cannot be solved simply by starving yourself or just walking. The priority must be removing the metabolic debris—Dameum and Eohyeol—and treating the Spleen deficiency to 'switch on' your fluid metabolism. Only then is the internal environment primed for body fat to actually burn.
