What exactly is a 'cheating day,' and why does it disrupt the progress of my diet?
A cheating day is a designated day during a diet to consume high-calorie foods as a psychological reward. This disrupts progress through a cycle of overeating, insulin spikes, and increased appetite, leading to rapid fat accumulation and a breakdown of dietary discipline.
Physiologically, when you suddenly overeat after a period of extreme calorie restriction, your body perceives it as an opportunity. Blood sugar spikes, causing an excessive release of insulin, which promotes the rapid storage of excess energy as body fat. This hormonal imbalance can impair appetite control for several days, breaking your metabolic rhythm.
From the perspective of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), this phenomenon is viewed through the concept of 'Dameum' (痰飮, Phlegm-Fluid). Dameum refers to metabolic waste or stagnant fluids that accumulate when the body's fluid metabolism is impaired. Sudden overeating can lead to 'Bi-heo' (脾虛, Spleen Deficiency), weakening the digestive function. This prevents food from being processed correctly, causing it to transform into Dameum and accumulate throughout the body.
This accumulation of Dameum obstructs the circulation of Qi and Blood, making the body feel heavy and inducing edema (swelling). Consequently, a cheating day intended for psychological satisfaction actually lowers metabolic efficiency. Rather than extreme restriction followed by bingeing, it is far more effective to maintain a sustainable diet tailored to your individual digestive capacity and metabolic state.
