I've been following some diet drink recipes from Starbucks; how is this viewed from a Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) perspective?

Popular 'diet hack' recipes can be trickier than they seem. Weight loss isn't simply about lowering calories; consuming ingredients that clash with your specific constitution or metabolic state can actually impair your digestive function. It is more important to assess your current physical condition than to blindly follow viral trends.

Many people follow trending diet plans only to experience digestive upset or nausea because they ignore their unique body type. While standard diet drinks lower calories by removing syrup or switching to low-fat milk, TKM takes a more holistic approach. First, we must consider the state of your digestive system. Consuming cold beverages frequently can lead to Spleen Deficiency (Bi-heo, 脾虛). When the Spleen's function weakens, nutrient absorption drops, and your overall energy levels plummet. We also worry about the accumulation of waste products. Even if sugar is replaced with artificial sweeteners, the key is how your body processes them. If metabolism is impaired, it leads to the buildup of Phlegm-Fluid (Dam-eum, 痰飮), making your body feel heavy and sluggish. Furthermore, blood circulation is critical. Combining an overly restrictive diet with cold drinks can cause Blood Stasis (Eo-hyeol, 瘀血), which obstructs blood flow. This often manifests as cold hands and feet, which inevitably slows down your metabolic rate. Ultimately, the answer lies in whether the drink suits your specific constitution. Checking your digestive capacity is far more efficient than following a recipe others recommend. Pay attention to whether a specific drink makes you feel comfortable or bloated—that small difference determines the success of your diet. I encourage you to visit the clinic so we can evaluate your constitutional state together.
