Oatmeal seems very popular for weight loss these days. Is there a way to eat it that would be best for my body according to Traditional Korean Medicine?

Oatmeal is an excellent food, but from a TKM perspective, it should be consumed according to your 'Spleen' (digestive) strength to avoid the buildup of 'Phlegm-fluid' (metabolic waste). It is best to eat it warm and paired with circulation-boosting ingredients and protein to support your metabolism while keeping your digestion comfortable.

Many people try oatmeal for dieting, but it is important to progress according to your specific constitution rather than just following trends. Here are four TKM-based tips for consuming oatmeal: 1. Assess your digestive power. In TKM, weak digestion is called 'Spleen Deficiency' (脾虛). If you experience frequent bloating, the coarse fiber in oats can be burdensome. In this case, start with a well-cooked, soft porridge. 2. Consume it warm. While 'overnight oats' soaked in cold milk are convenient, they can cause 'Phlegm-fluid' (痰飮)—non-physiological waste—in those with a cold constitution. Cooking oats in warm water or milk maintains body temperature and improves metabolic efficiency. 3. Add ingredients that aid circulation. If you find it particularly hard to lose weight, you may have 'Blood Stasis' (瘀血). Sprinkling warm-natured cinnamon powder can improve the circulation of Qi and Blood, making it easier to discharge waste. 4. Reinforce your energy with protein. Eating only oats can lead to quick hunger and symptoms of 'Qi Deficiency' (氣虛). Include proteins like chicken breast or eggs to prevent a drop in your basal metabolic rate. Weight loss can be a lonely journey, and I’ve personally experienced the trial and error involved. Don't be too rushed; listen to your body and make changes gradually. If it feels overwhelming, I am here to help you find the path that fits you best.
