Doctor, is it possible to lose weight just by walking every day? I’d like to know how Korean medicine clinics recommend walking for exercise.

Walking is one of the safest exercises, yet it can be difficult to maximize its efficiency. In Traditional Korean Medicine, we prioritize the harmonious flow of Qi and Blood (Gi-hyeol). Rather than just sweating profusely, the goal is to awaken the Spleen-Qi (Bi-gi), which serves as the body’s metabolic engine. Focus on adjusting your pace and stabilizing your breathing according to your current physical condition.

I remember when I first started walking; I was so out of shape that I felt dizzy and breathless. If you let your ambition outpace your physical state, you risk injuring your joints while metabolic waste known as Phlegm-fluid (Dameum) remains trapped in the body. Here is a step-by-step guide to walking for successful weight loss: 1. Check for Dampness-Phlegm (Seup-dam): If your body feels heavy or swells easily, walk slowly at first. When waste products block the body's pathways, energy cannot be consumed efficiently. 2. Support Spleen-Qi (Bi-gi) with posture: People with Spleen-deficiency (Bi-heo) often have a hunched posture. Keeping your chest open and your core slightly engaged allows your vital energy to circulate better. 3. Use interval walking for Qi and Blood (Gi-hyeol) circulation: I recommend an interval method—strolling for 5 minutes and walking briskly for 3 minutes. This is highly effective for clearing Blood Stasis (Eo-hyeol), which is essentially 'stagnant' blood. 4. Mindful breathing and hydration: After walking, soothe your thirst with lukewarm water rather than gulping down ice-cold water, which can shock your internal systems. Finding a pace that suits your individual Constitution (Che-jil) is more important than blindly following others. In my experience, the most efficient path is to identify your current level of Phlegm-fluid at the clinic and set a customized exercise intensity that matches your body's needs.
