I'm struggling to lose weight after giving birth. How does a Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) clinic help with postpartum weight loss?

Postpartum weight loss should not begin with restrictive fasting. The key is to first restore your body's weakened state; when your vital energy (Qi) is low, your metabolism slows down. Therefore, I follow a phased approach: first boosting your energy, then eliminating metabolic waste, and finally managing weight. Forcing weight loss before your body is ready can compromise your overall health, requiring a meticulous and personalized approach.

Postpartum weight loss must be fundamentally different from general dieting. While the desire to return to your pre-pregnancy weight is urgent, extreme calorie restriction at this stage can deplete your vital energy, potentially transforming your body into a 'weight-gain prone constitution.' At Baekrokdam Clinic, we follow a strategic sequence for recovery and weight loss: 1. Restoration of Qi and Blood: We first replenish the Qi and Blood depleted during childbirth. If you suffer from Spleen Deficiency (脾虛)—where the digestive and absorptive organs are weakened—your metabolism will remain stagnant, making weight loss difficult regardless of how little you eat. 2. Removal of Blood Stasis (瘀血) and Phlegm-Fluid (痰飮): We clear 'Eohyeol' (residual blood/stasis in the uterus) and 'Dameum' (accumulated metabolic waste). Just as a highway must be cleared of debris to restore traffic, these obstructions must be removed to restart your metabolism. 3. Edema Management: Postpartum swelling is often caused by circulatory blockage rather than simple water weight. We use herbal medicine to regulate fluid metabolism and reduce edema. 4. Gradual Weight Reduction: Only after the body has recovered and the metabolic rate has increased do we move into the phase of active body fat reduction. If you push too hard, your body will send warning signals, such as dizziness or aching joints. I believe that assessing your current level of recovery and finding the appropriate pace is actually the fastest and safest path to reaching your goal.
