I want to lose weight after giving birth. What is the process for postpartum dieting at a Korean medicine clinic?
Starving yourself is not the answer. We prioritize 'recovery' before moving to 'clearing.' We first address postpartum wind (Sanhu-pung) and edema to stabilize your body, then shift toward boosting metabolism to burn body fat. Based on clinical experience, rushing the process often leads to exhaustion; therefore, we provide a customized 3-to-4 step plan tailored to your current physical condition.
Postpartum weight loss is fundamentally different from general weight loss. Immediately after childbirth, the body is in a depleted state; attempting restrictive diets or intense exercise too early can compromise your health rather than reduce fat. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), we typically follow these four stages:
1. Recovery of Qi and Blood & Edema Removal: We first prevent postpartum wind (Sanhu-pung) and resolve blood stasis (Eo-hyeol). Clearing these metabolic wastes is essential to open the pathways for weight loss.
2. Strengthening Digestive Function: Postpartum mothers are prone to Spleen Deficiency (Bi-heo). If digestive power is compromised, even the best herbal tonics cannot be absorbed properly, which can leave the body feeling heavy and sluggish.
3. Removal of Phlegm-Fluid and Metabolic Activation: We remove accumulated Phlegm-Fluid (Dam-eum)—metabolic debris within the body—while gradually increasing your basal metabolic rate. This is the stage where body fat begins to burn more effectively.
4. Weight Maintenance and Musculoskeletal Stabilization: Finally, we balance the body to prevent the yo-yo effect and reinforce joints and muscles weakened during childbirth.
Many people assume that eating less is the only way to lose weight, but for postpartum recovery, the sequence of 'filling' (nourishing) and 'emptying' (detoxing) is critical. Let's assess which stage your body is currently in to start your personalized journey.
