I'm worried because I can't seem to lose weight in my lower body no matter what I do. How does a Korean medicine clinic manage lower body obesity?

In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), lower body obesity is often viewed not just as simple fat accumulation, but as a result of severely impaired circulation. For office workers who sit all day, waste products tend to accumulate around the pelvis, hindering blood flow. This is frequently diagnosed as 'Blood Stasis' (Eohyeol) or 'Phlegm-fluid' (Dameum). Rather than simply fasting, a systematic treatment is required to clear these internal blockages and restore the body's natural flow.

Many patients visit our clinic frustrated that their legs remain swollen despite having a thin upper body. In Korean medicine, we typically manage lower body obesity through a specialized four-step approach. First, we address 'Phlegm-fluid' (Dameum), which is a sticky internal residue. This waste product forms when water metabolism is compromised. Eliminating this unnecessary fluid, which often manifests as edema (swelling), is the essential first step of the weight loss process. Second, we resolve 'Blood Stasis' (Eohyeol) to clear the circulatory pathways. Blood Stasis refers to a state where blood is stagnant or poorly circulating. Especially for women, keeping the lower abdomen warm to facilitate smooth blood flow around the pelvic region is vital for reducing lower body volume. Third, we strengthen energy metabolism. If a patient is in a state of 'Spleen Deficiency' (Biheo), the digestive system fails to utilize energy properly, leading the body to store it in the lower extremities. By invigorating the Spleen (the primary organ for digestion and distribution), we ensure that energy is evenly dispersed throughout the body. Finally, we help patients establish lifestyle habits tailored to their unique constitution. While the lower body often shows changes more slowly than the upper body, correcting the fundamental circulatory system will eventually make your body feel significantly lighter and more balanced.
