A lot of people use protein shakes or supplements while dieting. From a Korean Medicine perspective, which products do you recommend?
Commercial protein supplements are convenient for muscle maintenance, but they can cause bloating or gas depending on your individual constitution. Rather than blindly following trends, it is essential to choose a protein source that aligns with your specific digestive capacity and metabolic state. Finding a product that sits comfortably in your stomach should be your top priority.
Protein supplements are certainly efficient; they prevent muscle loss and serve as a great alternative for busy professionals who find it difficult to prepare meat-based meals. However, from a Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM) perspective, if an individual with Spleen Deficiency (脾虛, bi-heo)—meaning a weak digestive system—consumes high-concentration protein, it can fail to be processed and instead turn into 'Phlegm-fluid' (痰飮, dam-eum). This is a type of non-physiological metabolic waste that causes the body to feel heavy and swollen, defeating the purpose of the diet. Additionally, artificial sweeteners in these products can disrupt the gut microbiome. Therefore, I recommend plant-based proteins or whole foods for those with weak digestion or constipation. Conversely, individuals with a robust build and significant internal heat may handle animal-based proteins like whey more effectively. The most important thing is to listen to your body: if a product makes you feel bloated or heavy, that is a clear signal from your digestive system that it is not the right fit for your constitution.
