Greetings from Baengnokdam Korean Medicine Clinic.

Today, we'd like to talk about frozen shoulder.

Medically, frozen shoulder is referred to as adhesive capsulitis. It's a condition where the joint capsule surrounding the shoulder joint thickens and adheres due to inflammation, leading to pain and restricted movement.

It was named 'frozen shoulder' (literally 'fifty-shoulder') because it primarily affects individuals over 50. However, there's been an increase in cases among younger age groups recently, so awareness is important.

The symptoms of frozen shoulder can vary.

Initially, a feeling of stiffness and discomfort in the shoulder is present. Gradually, the pain worsens, making it difficult to move the arm in specific directions, such as lifting it or reaching behind the back.

Particularly, the pain can become more severe at night, sometimes leading to sleep disturbances.

In severe cases, a clicking or popping sound might occur when moving the arm, and the shoulder joint area may swell and feel warm.
