I've seen products labeled as 'diet probiotics.' What exactly are they, and how do they actually help with weight loss?

Unlike general probiotics, diet probiotics contain specific strains designed to help reduce body fat. They work by altering the gut environment to decrease carbohydrate absorption and increase excretion, thereby preventing excessive fat accumulation. Rather than just aiding digestion, they act as a supportive tool that influences how your body processes and stores energy.

From a modern medical perspective, our gut is home to trillions of microorganisms. When harmful bacteria—often colloquially called 'obesity germs'—increase, it can create a constitution that gains weight more easily even with the same caloric intake. Diet probiotics aim to correct this imbalance to facilitate smoother energy metabolism. In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), this condition can be interpreted through the concepts of 'Dameum' (phlegm-fluid retention) and 'Bi-heo' (Spleen deficiency). 'Dameum' refers to the accumulation of unnecessary metabolic waste in the body, while 'Bi-heo' describes a weakened state of the Spleen, the organ responsible for digestion and transformation. When the gut environment is compromised, metabolic waste (Dameum) accumulates more easily, and the body enters a state of Spleen deficiency, disrupting the rhythm of nutrient absorption and excretion. This often manifests as a feeling of heaviness or lethargy. Diet probiotics help improve the gut environment to prevent the buildup of these wastes. However, it is important to note that no single strain acts as a 'magic pill' for instant weight loss. Because the ideal strain varies depending on an individual's constitution and gut health, it is crucial to first assess your digestive state. If you visit our clinic, we can analyze your current gut environment and determine the best approach for your specific body type.
