I've heard that oatmeal diets are trending lately. What exactly is this, and why does it help with weight loss?

Oatmeal consists of roasted, flattened oats. Its effectiveness lies in complex carbohydrates and soluble fiber, which slow down sugar absorption. This prevents blood glucose spikes and inhibits the overproduction of insulin, thereby reducing the amount of fat stored in the body and suppressing false hunger.

From a Western medical perspective, the beta-glucan in oatmeal forms a viscous gel in the intestines. This delays the absorption of nutrients, preventing postprandial glucose spikes. When insulin levels remain stable, the body is more likely to utilize fat for energy rather than storing it. From the perspective of Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), many modern individuals suffer from 'Dameum' (痰飮, accumulated metabolic waste/phlegm) due to irregular eating habits. Those with a 'Bi-heo' (脾虛, Spleen Deficiency) constitution—characterized by weakened digestive function—often experience bloating and heaviness when consuming refined carbohydrates. Coarse grains like oatmeal help resolve this 'Dameum' and support the 'Yun-hwa' (運化, transportation and transformation) function of the Spleen, helping the body process nutrients into energy more efficiently. However, since oatmeal possesses a 'cool' nature, individuals with a sensitive or cold constitution may experience indigestion or dizziness. It is essential to determine if your digestive capacity and constitution are compatible with this diet before starting. If you are unsure, I encourage you to visit the clinic for a personalized consultation.
