I'm planning to start a postpartum diet. Are there any warning signs that it might be too taxing or dangerous for my body?

The body is extremely sensitive after childbirth; excessive fasting or intense exercise can actually hinder your recovery. If you experience extreme fatigue, chills, or sudden dizziness, these are signals from your body that it is not yet time to diet. Prioritizing the restoration of your vitality (Qi) over weight loss is crucial for a safe and sustainable recovery.

Postpartum weight loss is fundamentally different from general weight loss. Restricting your diet prematurely can lead to complete physical exhaustion. You should stop and reassess if you notice the following signals: 1. Sudden Chills and Loss of Vitality: In Traditional Korean Medicine (TKM), this is viewed as a state where Qi and Blood (氣血) are significantly depleted. When energy is low, the body struggles with thermoregulation, and forced fasting will further delay recovery. 2. Persistent Edema and Heaviness: When 'Dam-eum' (痰飮, the accumulation of metabolic waste/phlegm) increases, circulation is impaired, making the body feel heavy. This may be a circulatory issue rather than simple swelling. 3. Joint Pain and Weakness: Due to hormones that relax joints during pregnancy, the body remains fragile postpartum. Excessive exercise at this stage can strain the joints and increase the risk of chronic pain. 4. Indigestion and Severe Lethargy: Symptoms of 'Spleen Deficiency' (脾虛) can impair nutrient absorption. If you feel hungry yet completely devoid of energy, you must focus on restoring digestive functions first. 5. Emotional Instability and Insomnia: Pressure to lose weight combined with postpartum wind (San-hu-pung) or hormonal shifts can lead to psychological overload. Ultimately, the key is 'removing while replenishing' rather than simply 'emptying.' We recommend receiving a professional diagnosis to determine whether your body is still in the recovery phase or ready for weight loss.
